Postgraduate degree by research

  1. Check the program entrance requirements and confirm that you are eligible to apply for the program you are interested in.
  2. Review potential research scholarships.
  3. Refer to the application dates for application closing dates.
  4. Seek academic advice.
  5. Determine from the table below how you need to apply.
  6. Check and complete the extra requirements by the closing date.
  7. Apply using the appropriate method by the closing date.
  8. Your application will then go through the research selection process.
  9. If you receive an offer from RMIT, you need to either accept it by enrolling by the date indicated in your offer letter or defer your offer.

Credit transfer and higher education recognition of prior learning application form (PDF 625kb 4p)

It is a compulsory requirement that all RMIT higher degree by research students complete a research methods course. You can apply for an exemption if you have completed a research methods course at RMIT or another institute using this form.

Current RMIT students who are seeking credit for previous RMIT studies do not need to submit transcripts or statements of results. Students who are seeking credit for study at other institutions must supply certified copies of these documents with the application form.


Research selection process

Method and ranking

All domestic applications will be ranked based on a model that has been approved by RMIT’s Research Committee. Ranking applications is necessary as the number of funded places and scholarships we have to offer are usually fewer than the number of applications we receive

Communication of selection decision

The School of Graduate Research will notify you about the outcome of your application in writing via post. Response time will vary depending on your nominated program and school, and the time of year you apply. Please refer to the timeline below for an estimate of when you should receive a reply by.
